Progression of trailer

To add a more visual aspect to out trailer we decided to freeze some of the frames and add a drawing like filter to them. To do this we freezed the frames we wanted to look arty and made these into stills, we then impoted these stills into Adobe Photoshop. The picture layer was duplicated and we went to FILTERS>>STYLIZED>>FIND EDGES. We then went into the layer menu and changed the menu which said 'normal' to 'vivd lights'. We then saved this as a TIFF and impoted it back into Final Cut Express. Below is some examples:

final poster analysis

This is our final poster design. When choosing ideas for the image, we knew we wanted to portray the idea of the character having two different personalities. However, we did not want it look like they were twins. We decided that we would have two pictures of Jenny standing side by side wearing two different outfits, this idea then progressed to have Jenny standing side by side but make it look like there is a wall seperating the two personalities. We thought it would be best to have Jenny in the same pose but make sure that the two outfits completely contrasted each other.

We wanted the first personality to be just a plain ordinary teenager, who didn't like to stand out from the crowd and got on well at school etc. To do this we put Jenny in quite plain looking clothes and her hair in bunches with odd coloured hair bands to create the assumption that she has not made an effort with her apperance. The shirt she wore was fully buttoned and she wore odd bracelets on her arms, none that really matched. She is wearing minimal makeup, again to show that she has not made an effort.

The second personality is much more outgoing, she likes to be centre of attention and is constantly at parties drinking alot and taking drugs. Jenny put her hair down and her eye make-up was much darker creating the assumption that she has spent time on her appearnace. She wore a dress, had much heavier jewllery on and her nails were painted black.

To create the wall effect, we had Ellen holding up a piece of flooring with weighted things behind it too. Jenny leaned against the wall in the pose we wanted her in. She leaned in the same direction for both of the outfits and then in Adobe Photoshop we flipped one of the images. Below is a picture Ellen holding the piece of wood:

We added the title in Courier font and added a tag line saying 'one teenage girl, locked in a downwards spiral'. We thought this tag line would make the concept of the two personalities clearer and not that they were twins. At the bootom of the poster we added two quotes that appear in our trailer and added the credits at the bottom. We also included a 15 age certificate logo and logos of different film distributors.

Empire magazine

We decided to create a magazine cover for 'Empire' magazine as the genre of our film is most suited to this. We looked at many different covers and noticed that the pictures mostly focused on the main character rather than the actor/actress. We therefore made sure that Jenny wore the costume of the character (Lyndsey) instead of clothes in her own style. We chose Jenny to be wearing clothes of the more rebellious side of Lyndsey's character as it is more suited for a glossy cover and is also more eye catching. We chose a pose that would make her look attractive while still being in character, as the more rebellious character likes to be centre of attention.

When designing the cover we looked at the typical conventions of 'Empire' magazine, we made sure the date and price was in the typical place. That a strap line was at the top of the page, and text at the bottom showing what the content of the magazine was. We also added a banner saying 'special collectors edition' this was because as the film is more independent rather than a blockbuster. The text of 'Spiral' is in Courier which is the same as the poster, adding to the theme of film. To make the cover look more interesting we added a blue circle of light to the make the picture stand out.

Live Type

On the last slide of the trailer (where Jenny is jumping) we added the title of the film and the release date. We created this in Live Type using the font called 'stringy'. We thought this font added to feel of the other slides where an arty effect is used. We chose the colour black so it stood out from the background. We positioned the the title on the right hand side where the grass verge is, we did not want to overlay the text over the picture because it would have been hard to see. The release date is directly opposite on the right hand side.

Feedback

I like some of your ideas here
The soundtrack is excellent - gives the whole a unified feel
Some of the framing is good and you have tried to hint at a decline towards the girl's demise
Plenty to do though
without the rewind bit the whole thing is 30 seconds so would need to be of incredible quality to access the higher marks so you will need to film more as you intend to
I really like the montage of arty shots of alcohol in your animatic - could be very effective
The shots in smoking area look odd (out of focus?) - redo

rough cut final

This is our final version of the rough cut we have made. The results from the questionnaire showed that the audience felt our film would be aimed teens both genders. They mostly liked the editing and camera shots, also the responses showed that they like the the sound track and they thought the rewind section was effective. Most of the responses showed that they felt that more of the story line could be revealed as it did not prove to be as clear as we thought. Most people decided that they would like to go and see the film from the trailer.

We have decided that to improve our trailer we should add more shots to show the downward spiral of the character and therefore improving the clarity of the story. We also think that the pace of the trailer should be faster and we are contemplating removing the rewind section. Or using slightly different camera angles in the rewind section. Also the close ups of the main character need to be re-filmed as they are blurry.

This is the Pearl and Dean website results for the film Thirteen, which are relevant to our film because its a similar film to which we are creating. So it gives us an idea about what audience our film should be aimed at. Because it has the same demographic as our film.

rough cut questionnaire

Questionnaire Group 85

What audience do you think our film is aimed at?

What did you like about our trailer?

What did you dislike about our trailer?

How could we improve?

Would you want to see this film?

Was the variety of camera shots consistent?

This is a questionnaire that we created to get feedback about our rough cut for our trailer. When we show our rough cut to the class we will hand this out and get the feedback.

Blog looks good -filming now coming on
You should film the animatic as it is a teaser trailer
To do
Jenny/ Jade
You need to upload your campaign stuff in detail by 13th Nov as the interim report is due soon and I will be going through my check list for individual entries - where there is a gap this will be reflected in the effort and current working grade

Costume design

We decided that as the teaser trailer covers the life of the main character she should be in different outfits in each shot to indicate different situations.

The shots where she is by herself she is wearing clothes of a typical teenage girl, stylish yet casual. She is wearing pastel colours, blues and greens in order to reflect the characters feelings; she does not want to stand out from the crowd.

We thought that in the party scenes the character should be more dressed up, so decided on skirts and more feminine tops. At one of the parties the girl is wearing a flowery top in red and pink, this indicates a different side to her character for when she is at social situations.

shooting schedule

We staged several party scenes over the half term break, and are now in the second week back from half term and have been filming each lesson and uploading the new footage. The schedule is to now film in the next lesson and then start our rough cut.

We may decide that some other scenes need to be shot and that some effects may be added using Photoshop. We will access this after the rough cut is completed.

Development of ideas

Development of Ideas
Over the half term, we came to a group decision that the original trailer idea did not fit the brief teaser trailer and was too long. To it make it easier to understand we have decided to focus the film on one main character instead of four characters.

We are going to keep the genre the same and still do a teen drama. We watched the teaser trailer for 'Lilja 4ever'. We thought the fast pace of this trailer would be more effective and create more of an enigma. Below is the teaser trailer:

Shooting schedule? Costume design?

This is the music that we would of liked to use on our trailer. However because of copyright issues we will be making something similar using soundtrack.

Ratings of Teen Drama Films.

As our film trailer involves drug use rating had to be taken into account. We looked at the rating of the 2003 film "Thirteen" which was an 18. "Thirteen" includes drug use however it also includes self- harm and sex all with actresses and actors under the age of 16. As our film includes people only over the age of 16 and will not include self-harm we have decided that the appropriate rating would be 15. A TV drama that has influenced the story-line of our film is channel four's "Skins" which on the DVD boxsets are rated a 15. We also are doing a film about 17 year olds so we need to make sure that our target audience are able to see the film.

final animatic

This is our final animatic. Katy created the images on photoshop along with the cartoons and then we put it all together using final cut express.

Final synopsis

A hard hitting drama showing the effects of drugs and alcohol on a teenage girl called Lyndsey Pryce (Jenny Lingham-Doe). Lyndsey was a typical teenage girl, a diligent student but also had the tendency to drink and smoke. However, after her mother overdoses on Heroin, Lyndsey takes a turn for the worse. The difference in the gap between a hard working student and a rebel teen widened and Lyndsey was constantly fighting the two conflicting personalties. The odd cigarette became harder drug abuse and instead of the occasional drink every weekend, it became the constant binge everyday. Lyndsey's life was becoming a downward spiral to the point where all control was lost leading to her tragic death.

Poster Analysis

HEYYYYY.
In a recent lesson we looked at the front cover of a magazine. It was to do with the british film industry over many years. The picture consisted of a large pile of film reels stacked into a large pile, appearing to go high into the sky. However, it was obvious that perhaps this magazine appealed to a older male and female age group, as it was sponsored by a car company called 'Volkswagen'. Furthermore, the colours were not particularly eye catching as it mainly consisted of greys and blues. The style of font chosen was quite classic, thus suggesting it may appeal to people with an interest in a magazine with more of a history to it.

We then compared this magazine front cover to a more new, recent, modern film magazine called 'empire'. The front cover to this contained a lot more colour and images that were perhaps more eye catching.

Analysis of a magazine cover

The type of magazine our film would appear on would be something like Empire magazine. Empire magazine is published monthly by Bauer Consumer Media, who also publishes Grazia and Closer. The magazine costs £3.99 and targets mainly males, ageing 18 onwards. However, the magazine is also appealing for women. Below is the front page of an issue released in August 2008:

On the front page of each issue is the star of the latest film, in this case it is Daniel Radcliffe who plays Harry Potter. He is wearing the iconic glasses which are smashed in one eye, and looks like he has been fighting. The magazine uses pictures which give clear indications to the audience of what the latest film is and an indication of the genre/plot. The colouring of the magazine is very dark, and looks like a night setting this could highlight the genre of the film which is fantasy. Normally the magazine has actors such as Bruce wllis, or actresses such as Meagan Fox, which would appeal to more of a male audience compared to Daniel Radcliffe. Harry Potter is known to have more of a female following, so this issue may have been bought more by women. However, the front cover also shows what other films are included inside the magazine such as Wolverine and Quantum of Solace, these films will appeal more to males so thy may buy it for the contents. The title is in a very bold type face and is red. This will grab the buyers attention and draw them to the magazine.

Our film may appear on a magazine like this becasue it is female based which would appeal to the males, but also covers teenage issues which would appeal to the younger generation.

This poster connotes young girls rebelling. The tongue piercing symbolises sex and adolescence. This is relevant to our teaser trailer because we will be having elements of these subjects in our trailer.

ellen teen movie family tree
katy - Teen Movie/ Romantic comedy movie family tree

jenny - Teen drama family tree

A2 preparation so far :)

In order to produce a proffesional and informative teaser trailer we needed to first research marketing campaign and teaser trailers of the genre we are planning to do. As we have decided to do a 'rebel teen thriller movie' i decided to look at the trailer of Thirteen (2003) i then drew up a story board of the first ten shots of the trailer. The themes that occured in the Thirteen trailer could be seen by what sort of image and shot was on the screen-

Pan of girls body - Sex
Close Up of eyes with heavy makeup - Intimacy
Close Up of belly ring piercing - Rebel
Long shot of couple in bed - Sex

I also researchs marketing campaigns for recent films such as The Dark Knight and Cloverfield. teaser trailer is something that is often used in order to get the audience excited, posters and websites are also often created to add extra hype to the audience. A element of mystery is used in most campaigns in order to make the audience want to pay to go and work out the mystery

A2 practical

In order to prepare for my A2 practical I have researched numerous teaser trailers of the same genre of the film we are going to be creating. I also researched into how certain films were marketed and what campaign they used when being released.
I decided to research the campaign for the film called Fish Tank. I found that the teaser trailer was first released on the internet using the name of the director in the trailer to attract an audience. Then the website was created which had images of the posters used for advertising the films (tubes, buses etc). All this information helped with my understanding of how to create a trailer and a buzz for a film release.

Teaser Trailers

In order to propare for the A2 practical coursework, I have looked at numerous teaser trailers such as Cloverfield and The Dark Knight.

The Cloverfield teaser trailer became popular mostly due to complementry media such as myspace and facebook. However, word of mouth also helped increase the popularity of the teaser trailer as well as online and mobile adverts.

The Dark Knight teaser trailer also had similar ways of advertising its teaser trailer. I also discovered that its official movie website helped do this also as it was a much waited for film.

Preperation for A2 coursework

To prepare for my A2 practical coursework, I thought it would be best to look at how a teaser trailer for a film worked as part of a marketing campaign, and also to see which other elements of the campign did best to promote the film.

The marketing campaign i decided to look at was 'Cloverfield' (2008) Directed by Mat Reeves. This was a viral marketing campaign and gained publicity by a teaser trailer, word of mouth and a widget (a portable chunk of code that can be installed and executed with any seperate HTML web page by an end user without requiring additional compication- taken from wikipedia).

Below is the teaser trailer for 'Cloverfield':

This teaser trailer was shown before the Transformer film released in the summer of 2007. The name of the film was not shown in the trailer, it only gave the release data and the name of the Producer, JJ Abrams. This would have created genre expectations as he also produced the television series 'Lost'. Anyone who wanted to search for the trailer on the Internet would have been led to a website named the release date of the film.

The excitment of the film led to online discussions on blogs etc. The release of the iconic poster of the Statue of Liberty heightened the online chatter and soon the webite was renamed with the name of the film and contained links to Myspace and Facebook. The 'word of mouth' effect created great publicity for the film and the marketing campaign is seen to be one of the best.

My group decided that we would like to do a teaser trailer for a film in the genre of a teenage film. I decided to look at a teaser trailer for a film in that genre which is being promoted at the moment. Below is the teaser trailer for 'Fame':

The genre of this film is Teen Musical, the genre conventuions of this film are:
1. They are all in their youth except for authority figures e.g teachers.
2. They are all wearing dance clothes to reinfore the dance school setting.
3. All the scenes tale place on either a stage, dance studio etc.
The Narrative of the film is young teenagers all trying to become famous.
4. The teenagers represent typical middle/upper class boys and girls who want to make it in show buisness.

Below is the poster that was released for the film 'Fame'
The poster shows three of the main characters standing on a stage and doing their talent, one is playing the guitar, one is dancing and the other is singing. These actions give a clear indication to the audience of what genre the film is and the age of the characters suggest the target audience who might be interested in seeing the film. There is a shaft of light coming from the left, creating a spot light on the three people again reinforcing that the film is about wanting to be famous and 'being in the spotlight'. The title takes up half of the poster and is in the iconic type face, the effect of stage lights again reinforces the plot of the story.

Synopsis for trailer.

We are going to do a thriller (older) version of "Thirteen" (2003). The main plot will be about a group of girls going to a party and experimenting with new experiences (sex, drugs, drink, relationships). This will be done in the form of a montage of the party with different shots of people around the house e.g. sniffing cocaine, taking tablets, putting makeup on, drinking shots, dancing, kissing. However what starts off as just a little bit of fun goes terribly wrong when one of the girls (Kayte) overdoses on an unknown substance (shot of her foaming at the mouth). Another girl (Jade) has her drink spiked and gets taken advantage of by an unidentified male. After finding her friends (Jenny) over reacts and runs onto the roof cliff-hanger ending. Maybe filmed handheld for some of the shots with one of the characters as the narrator.
